The insider added: “The producers would dearly love to get Angelina back in the role and the door is being left open to her. This would be a far darker movie with a lot more emphasis on storyline.”

Three Indian Air Force (IAF) test pilots died on Friday when the prototype aircraft Saras of the state-run National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) crashed near Bidadi, about 30 km from Bangalore, IAF sources said.

“The Saras aircraft, which took off from the HAL airport in the city at 2.55 pm on a test flight, crashed around 4.05 pm in a field near Bidadi on the outskirts of the city. The Bangalore rural police told us all the three pilots died after the aircraft caught fire,” an official of the IAF’s aircraft systems & testing establishment (ASTE) said.

The deceased pilots were Squadron Leader Ilairaj, Wing Commander Praveen and Wing Commander Shah.

The 14-seater multi-role Saras is an indigenous aircraft, designed and developed by the Bangalore-based NAL for use by the military and civil aviation sector. NAL is a constituent of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

“The new version of the aircraft was on a regular test flight. It had a smooth take-off from the HAL runway where ASTE is located. About an hour later, the aircraft lost contact with our air traffic control (ATC). We learnt about the crash from the police,” the official said.

The research is still in its early stages. However, the researchers said the compound could eventually make its way into sexual lubricants that women could use to avoid infection with the virus that causes AIDS.

“It’s a promising lead that we’re on to something that’s a different way to approach the problem of prevention,” said study co-author Dr. Ashley T. Haase, head of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Minnesota.

Currently, the most practical ways to prevent HIV transmission are abstinence, monogamy with an uninfected partner and protected sex. Researchers have spent years trying to develop another option: a gel that women, and perhaps men, could use to kill the AIDS virus before it enters the body.

But scientists have had trouble killing the virus without harming the person in the process. Some gels, for example, actually made transmission easier by causing tears in the lining of the vagina.

In the new research, researchers examined a compound called glycerol monolaurate, which is recognized as safe. It’s found in products ranging from ice cream to cosmetics and kills a variety of germs in addition to helping substances mix properly, said study co-author Patrick M. Schlievert, a professor of biology at the University of Minnesota.

In the new study, researchers tested the compound on five female rhesus macaques that were vaginally exposed to the monkey equivalent of the AIDS virus. The findings were published in the March 4 online issue of Nature.

The monkeys avoided infection. Four out of five other monkeys who weren’t treated with the compound developed infections after being exposed.

The next step is to move on to studies that will confirm the compound works and to try to find doses that “are more applicable to the real world,” Haase said.

There are other questions to be answered, including whether the treatment would protect men from infection when they have sex with men or women.

The good news: The compound would cost less than a cent for each dose for a woman, Schlievert said.

Dr. Jeffrey C. Laurence, a professor at Cornell University who studies AIDS, said the new study is innovative, because the treatment targets the body’s immune responses rather than directly killing HIV itself.

The challenge is to develop a product that prevents AIDS and is also “unobtrusive, easy to use, and has long-lasting effects, so that it need not be applied daily or before each act of intercourse,” said Laurence, who’s also a senior scientist for programs at The Foundation for AIDS Research.

Addressing a packed press conference at the Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi, along with Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and SY Quraishi, CEC N Gopalaswami announced that the Lok Sabha polls will be held in five phases between April 16 and May 13. The number of phases will vary from states to states.

The counting will take place on May 16, the CEC said, adding the new Lok Sabha will be constituted by June 2.

Assembly Elections in three states, namely Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Sikkim, would be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha polls. Moreover, by-polls to seven Assembly seats in different states would also be held during this period.

The total electorate in the country currently stands at 714 million, an increase of 43 million from 2004 when the last General Elections were held.

For the first time, elections to the 543-member House would be held under the redrawn Parliamentary seats, an exercise that forced several leaders to virtually start from scratch and nurture new constituencies.

Political leaders with whom the Commission had held consultations last month wanted the exercise to be held in minimum number of phases. The last Lok Sabha polls in 2004 were conducted in four phases.

This is also for the first time that the General Elections would be held on the basis of the photo electoral rolls carried out country-wide except Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and Nagaland, sources said.

The photo electoral rolls would be used in 522 of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats in this year’s election, the CEC said.

The announcement of the poll dates came a day after President Pratibha Patil rejected the controversial recommendation by CEC Gopalaswami for the removal of EC Navin Chawla, who is now expected to head the poll panel.

The President arrived at a “considered opinion” and accepted the government recommendation for rejection of the CEC’s report on January 31 against Chawla, who has been accused of being biased in favour of the Congress party, a Rashtrapati Bhawan communiqué said.

The decision came as no surprise since the government had made clear its view that the CEC was not empowered to seek removal of a fellow Commissioner except if a Presidential reference was made to him.

Chawla, a retired IAS officer, is now expected to succeed Gopalaswami on April 20 when his tenure as CEC ends.
